What Is Virtualization?
Virtualization is a dynamic trend in IT that involves the virtual, rather than actual, version of something, such as an operating system, a server, a storage device, or network resource. The main goal of virtualization is to centralize management tasks while improving resource sharing and increasing the capacity to expand to meet future needs.
- Server Virtualization uses a software application, to divide a physical server into multiple virtual servers or partitions, so that each appears as a dedicated machine with its own operating system and capabilities. Through the use of a blade server, network administrators can achieve more processing powering, use less physical space, simplify cabling, and reduce power consumption.
- Desktop Virtualization allows users to run multiple operating systems on a single physical computer and access hosted desktops from any location and any device. Desktop virtualization streamlines desktop management & control, reduces operating costs and delivers complete desktop environments with greater application compatibility.
- Storage Virtualization is the consolidation of physical storage from multiple storage devices into what appears to be a single storage device, which is managed from a central console. Storage virtualization is commonly used in storage area networks (SANs).
- Operating System Virtualization uses software to allow a piece of hardware to run multiple operating systems at the same time decreasing the use of expensive processing power and also less hardware expense.
- Network Virtualization combines the available resources in a network by splitting up the available bandwidth into independent channels which can be assigned to a particular server or device in real time. Virtualization disguises the complexity of the network by dividing it into manageable parts.
Looking Ahead
Virtualization is a fast growing technology that changes quickly. Modular hardware components are providing high availability and a flexible infrastructure, while software creators are making it possible to manage hundreds, if not thousands of virtual environments.
A virtualized environment is simpler to manage, consumes less power, and makes greater use of existing, under utilized computing resources. This translates into a longer life for the data center and significantly adds to the health of the bottom line.
